“Don’t worry daddy, I’ll make you famous again”

So I will start with my general opinion, then if you click down on the read more tab I will go more into detail *spoiler alert*

Well after over a month of waiting, I finally went to see sinister at the cinema on Saturday night... and I was disappointed :( I’m not sure if it’s because everyone had built it up to be like the greatest film of all time, but it just wasn’t. don’t get me wrong, I hid behind my coat throughout, and jumped constantly and the idea - the storyline - was brilliant, really original and well thought out, but overall the film was really slow, and kept doing that annoying thing where you think something fucked up is going to happen, then it was his daughter up in the night cus she needed a wee. much like insidious, the film was full of jumpy moments and a majorly scary looking demon, but it also did what insidious did about 20 minutes before the end - went completely crap and took away from the whole film. Overall it wasn’t the worst film I’ve ever seen, and I would definitely say it’s worth a watch, but unlike some of my faves I couldn’t watch it over and over and I’ve definitely seen scarier.

Okay, so I realise everyone loves sinister and thinks it’s great, so if you've already watched it, here I will justify myself and why I wasn’t that keen. If you haven’t watched it and don’t want to know what happens - stop reading.

So I’ll start with the stuff I did like:

The home movies - They were absolutely mortifying and such a clever way to tell the story rather than the regular old internet search/library book/flashbacks. The fact that they were filmed on a super 8 camera just made it even freakier. The drowning and the lawnmower were my personal favourites. I’m pretty sure I actually screamed when it went over the body.

Ethan Hawke – I thought he was brilliant in this, especially in the scenes with Juliet Rylance who played his frustrated wife. I’ve always been a fan of Hawkes after watching ‘Taking Lives’ with Angelina Jolie. He’s good at playing the fucked up character as well as the doting  dad/husband.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much it.

My main issue with sinister was the pace. it seemed like the first hour or so of the film was just him watching the old movies and him walking around his house in slow motion jumping over nothing. I HATE FALSE JUMPS! theyre fine for one or two at the beginning, but when youre half way through the film and the only thing thats happened is him finding his son sleep walking/night terroring or whatever it gets a bit annoying. I actually wanted something horrid to happen just so i had jumped for a reason.

The next thing that annoyed me was when he was doing all this walking around the house and dead children started prancing around. that combined with their awful acting in the final scene made me feel like i was watching something the local youth club had put together as part of a contemporary dance peice. totally ruined the feel of the film.

Then of course, was the only thing that me and my friends can actually agree on – the ending. I was so angry when this film ended I could have screamed. The whole movie was pretty much this - they moved into the house, he finds the movies, figures out whats happened, and it happens to him. Where’s the part where he tries to stop it from happening to him?!! I felt like I waited over an hour for the film to really begin, and when he got back to his old house I was genuinely so excited. When the professor made him see what was happening in my head i was like "FUCK YEAH, SHIT JUST GOT REAL, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO  ELLISON? ARE YOU GOING TO KILL YOUR DAUGHTER? ARE YOU GOING TO SEND THAT DEMON BACK TO HELL?" oh no, no youre not. youre dead. oh...

What the fuck Scott Derrickson? Are you serious? He just dies? After all that? And its not even like we get to see his death, or I would have atleast liked to have seen his wife and child get killed infront of him so I would be left truly shocked. This film could have built up to a really amazing ending, but unfortunately, just like insidious before it, it got completely lame.

The children acting in the final scene are horrendous. I know they’re only kids, but can we please remind ourselves of Chloe Moretz? Or Kirsten Dunst in an interview with a vampire? They may be few and far between but there are still some great child actors out there – look harder casting! The kids ruined it for me yet again with all their synchronised shushing and head tilting. And then finally the nail in the coffin was Mr Boogie. Standing in the bushes outside your house at night – terrifying. Standing under water whilst your drowning – horrifying. Scooping you up like a baby whilst wearing a designer suit – erm… Seeing boogie standing there and physically moving made him seem much less frightening to me than when his face was just a shadowy blur at the scene of some grizzly crime. Leave the boogie man where he should be, in the dark and in the nightmares of little children.
